Thomas shook his head. "No, of course not. It's just..." he sighed, "She's our daughter."
Alec arched a brow, "I am well aware of that," he said dryly. "And it is for that reason I take no offense. Now please, go collect the girl."
They watched as the carriage turned the corner.
Thomas put his hand on his wife's shoulder and said simply, "They're gone."
Thomas held Barika tight, and squeezed his eyes shut. "You don't tell the Reeves 'no,' Barika. You know that as well as I do." Alec Reeves controlled all the shops in town and a bad review from him could be the death blow to your business. "Besides, she'll be well-provided for," he said, attempting to convince himself, as well as his wife. "Reeves collects a percentage of all the community shops for taxes."
